About the Common Unit Converter
The common converter collects the measurements people look up most often in daily life: distances, body weight, cooking volumes, room sizes, travel times and file sizes.
Metric units are decimal, so converting between them only moves the decimal point: 1 kilometer is 1,000 meters and 1 liter is 1,000 milliliters.
US customary and imperial units share names but not always values. A US gallon is about 3.785 liters, while an imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters, so always check which one a recipe or fuel figure uses.
Digital storage is converted with binary multiples here (1 GB = 1,024 MB), as most operating systems report it. Drive manufacturers label capacity in decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB), which is why a new disk often looks smaller than advertised.
See how the measurement systems relate on our Unit Systems page.
