About the Engineering Unit Converter

Engineering work mixes unit systems constantly: tyre and hydraulic pressures are quoted in bar or psi, aircraft and ship speeds in knots, and machine shafts in revolutions per minute.

Pressure is force per area. One bar is 100,000 pascals, roughly the atmospheric pressure at sea level, and equals about 14.5 psi.

A knot is one nautical mile per hour (1.852 km/h). Nautical miles are tied to the Earth’s latitude, which is why they are used in navigation.

Angles in calculations are usually radians: a full circle is 2π radians, or 360 degrees. Rotational speed in rpm divided by 60 gives revolutions per second (Hz).

See how the measurement systems relate on our Unit Systems page.
