About the Light (Illuminance) Converter
Illuminance measures how much light falls on a surface. The SI unit is the lux (one lumen per square meter); the foot-candle (one lumen per square foot) is still common in the United States.
One foot-candle equals about 10.764 lux. Typical guidance is around 300–500 lux for office desks, 100–200 lux for corridors, and over 10,000 lux in daylight outdoors.
Lux describes light arriving at a surface, not the output of a lamp. Lamp output is measured in lumens, and the resulting lux depends on distance and beam angle.
See how the measurement systems relate on our Unit Systems page.
